The horrifying massacre of 28 teachers and children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut yesterday has already elicited powerful emotional proclamations and assertions from notables and politicians chomping at the bit to exploit the tragedy.
Barack Obama, who amazingly, unlike the rest of us, has nasolacrimal canals on the outside edges of his eyes, almost immediately ‘tearfully’ announced that ‘we’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.’
Sadly, he didn’t take that position with Benghazi.
Even News Corp mogul Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox News, is calling for politicians to have the ‘courage to ban automatic weapons’.
Interesting, since no automatic weapons were used in yesterday’s shooting. But we agree with Murdoch, at least in part: Keeping automatic weapons out of the reach of Eric Holder almost certainly would have prevented the Fast & Furious debacle.
In fact, if we could have kept guns out of the hands of left wing nuts like Lee Harvey Oswald and Sirhan Sirhan two of the Kennedys would have likely lived long enough to screw up the country even worse than did Lyndon Johnson. It wouldn’t have saved Mary Jo Kopechne, but you can’t win them all.
Of course no national tragedy would be complete without an outlandish statement from Mikey ‘Big-Gulp’ Bloomberg calling for the ban of something. Immediate action is what the Mayor is insisting on this time… Which is what the freezing minions of Staten Island have been trying to tell him all along.
If we’d only had Bloomers before 9-11, to ban radical Islamists from taking flying lessons. Be honest. Can you even wait until this guy goes the way of all unremarkable politicians? Sixth runner-up on Dancing With The Stars.
Of course banning firearms will only satisfy one goal: forcing law-abiding citizens — and deranged citizens for that matter — to buy them where the criminals get theirs: on the streets. Handguns are more plentiful in New York City today than in 1928 when the city banned them.
We need strong national laws, right? Then we’ll only be able to get our guns where the Mexican drug cartels get theirs; from Eric Holder.
Whenever we wake to the horror of yet another senseless mass murder like the one at Sandy Hook yesterday, it would behoove us to hark back to another inexplicable massacre. The Luby’s massacre of 1991.
On that nightmarish day, 32-year-old Suzanna Hupp was lying on the floor taking cover with her parents after George Hennard crashed his truck through the doors and set his guns ablaze inside the fast food establishment in Killeen, Texas.
Ms. Hupp reached inside her purse to retrieve her .38-caliber revolver, only to realize she had left it in her car. She watched terrified as Hennard murdered her father and then her mother, while she lay helpless to stop him.
The tragedy of Sandy Hook is compounded by the fact that the most vulnerable among us, in a state with the most stringent gun laws in the nation, were murdered. And not one adult had the one thing that could have ended much of the carnage. A handgun.
