Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) on Thursday joined a group of Republicans threatening to filibuster gun control legislation in the Senate. “We, the undersigned, intend to oppose any legislation that would infringe on the American people’s constitutional right to bear arms, or on their ability to exercise this right without being subjected to government surveillance,” he wrote in a statement on his website.
“The Second Amendment to the Constitution protects citizens’ right to self-defense. It speaks to history’s lesson that government cannot be in all places at all times, and history’s warning about the oppression of a government that tries.”
Earlier this week, GOP Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.), Mike Lee (Utah), and Ted Cruz (Texas) wrote a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) pledging to “oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions.”
In adding his name to that letter on Thursday, Rubio gives the group some added heft and star power.
Unlike in the Senate, the filibuster was eliminated from House of Representatives parliamentary procedures in 1842, because of the growing size of the institution. It is an understandable albeit sometimes frustrating rule when big debates arise, like Obamacare… or Nancy Pelosi’s latest breast augmentation. Just kidding.
But this is not a joke. These senators are initiating an age-old strategy that will raise public awareness to Obama’s left-wing madness.
All too many Americans have become inured with the notion that government will ‘take care of it,’ and have neglected to understand that that same government can enslave them, when its power is not kept in check.
Historically the Left has championed the criminal who preys on society and trotted out their celebrity buffoons to target the gun rights of those most likely to become victims: the citizens themselves.
Under Obama they’re becoming bolder.
Here’s an excerpt of Shotgun Joe Biden’s statement this week in a conference call with ‘Mayors Against Illegal Guns,’ telling us exactly what the administration has in mind for America:
‘And lastly, but not least, the Assault Weapons ban and the limitation on the size of magazines let me say this as clearly as I can: this is just the beginning. We believe that weapons of war have no place on our streets…’ [Video]
Uh, right Joe. Except that is exactly what the Framers intended when they said, ‘A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.’
Er, Joe? A ‘militia’ is not a militia at all without weapons of war. The Founders intended for Americans to be armed to the hilt.
What, we’re supposed to believe we have matured beyond the threat of government tyranny? Hahhahahhah!
Two words: Barack Obama.
Rubio, Rand Paul, Mike Lee, and Ted Cruz represent a new breed within the GOP, one that hopefully will stand for individual rights. Which ain’t your everyday big government RINO’s forte.
