In the five years after JFK’s assassination, left wing groups backed by most Eastern Democrats and many in the media launched an attack on mail order firearms, or as LBJ called it, ‘mail order murder’. It was the beginning of concerted government gun control efforts in the United States, although FDR successfully moved to ban tommy guns in the 1930s.
After the MLK and RFK assassinations in the first half of 1968, their daily media campaign culminated in the Gun Control Act of 1968. Which the families of George Wallace, Vernon Jordan Jr., John Lennon, Ronald Reagan, and scads of others can tell you worked fabulously.
In his quest to capitalize on public hysteria over the Newtown massacre Barack Obama has used the same subterfuge to push senseless background checks on law abiding Americans.
As President Obama prepares to head to Colorado on Wednesday to push gun control legislation, some are calling into question the validity of a key statistic he’s using to tout his message on near-universal background checks.
During several speeches, Obama has said 40 percent of all gun purchases were made without a background check.
But that number is nearly two decades old and comes from a poll with a relatively tiny sample size. Gun rights groups like the National Rifle Association, as well as The Washington Post’s “Fact Checker,” are calling out the president’s stat, saying his numbers on background checks need a background check of their own.
During a speech last week, Obama asked, “Why wouldn’t we want to make it more difficult for a dangerous person to get his or her hand on a gun? Why wouldn’t we want to close the loophole that allows as many as 40 percent of all gun purchases to take place without a background check? Why wouldn’t we do that?” [More]
Why? The fact that Obama’s numbers were dragged out of thin air notwithstanding: because it is none of the government’s business what firearms law abiding Americans have in their gun safes and closets; and predicting which citizens may break the law at some future date is impossible.
President Obama is trying to sell his background checks legislation based on the rationale that if we just know who have guns we can curtail gun violence. The President went to Harvard; he doesn’t believe this, but he thinks that because you didn’t go to Harvard you will.
He will never account for all the firearms because (to drone out an all-too-obvious fact) criminals don’t register their guns. Well, Public Enemy Number 1 Eric Holder does, which is how we know what guns he sold to the Mexican drug cartels.
But, as Mr. Gabby Giffords, Mark Kelly, would tell you, were he honest, it is not easy to purchase a gun in the United States, under existing gun laws.
Oh, you didn’t know? Kelly was initially denied the purchase of both his handgun and AR-15, something he failed to show in his viral somebody-please-stop-me-before-I-exercise-my-constitutional-rights video. Reason? He used an illegal driver’s license.
Democrats lie every time they seek to restrict our gun rights. No one knew in 1963 that ‘mail order murder’ was rampant in the U.S.; in fact, Oswald bought his guns by mail because they were cheaper, not because he couldn’t have purchased them elsewhere.
No, Democrats have to lie because the truth will not stand up to public scrutiny: over time, they intend to end private gun ownership in the United States.
Now all they need are a few sellout Republicans and they’ll have something.
