When Mark David Chapman assassinated John Lennon in New York City in 1980, we were overcome with grief for Yoko Ono … And we hate Yoko Ono. If it weren’t for Yoko Ono, Lennon would have probably been one of the Fab Four until he was 64. Think of all the great Beatles’ hits we don’t have today because of… Don’t get me started.
So it has been easy to summon compassion for former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the aftermath of her tragic shooting… and even her whackadoo husband Mark Kelly.
But enough is enough.
Former congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ op-ed piece is getting a lot of praise on Twitter. This is the part of the piece that caught our attention:
What they will do is create one fair system for all gun buyers, instead of the giant loophole we have now. Right now, we have one system where responsible gun owners take a background check — my husband, Mark, took one just last month, and it took 5 minutes and 36 seconds. I remember waiting a lot longer than that for the subway to take me to my office when I lived in New York City! And then we have a second system for those who don’t want to take a background check. Those people — criminals, or people suffering from mental illness, like the young man who shot me — can buy as many guns as they want on the Internet or at a gun show, no questions asked.
That doesn’t make sense. We know how to fix it — by establishing a universal background check system. And yet some of our elected officials are not listening. Some even say this legislation shouldn’t get a vote in the United States Congress. [Emphasis added.]
Okay, we are taking the gloves off.
First, Mark Kelly did NOT pass his background check because he attempted to purchase his guns under false pretenses, and used an illegal identification. (We suspect this was intentional, to demonstrate just how flawed gun laws supposedly are, but we’ll give Kelly the benefit of the doubt.) … Second thought, no, we won’t.
But there is a third and vitally more important point to make about the mass shooting that partially incapacitated Ms. Giffords and left so many of her innocent constituents dead and wounded:
The congresswoman and her staff failed to provide security for her appearance at the Arizona shopping mall on that tragic day in 2011.
Democrats across the board scrambled to lay blame on everything from weak gun laws to Sarah Palin, but the national media buried the fact that Giffords’ staff made no security arrangements for her appearance. Ms. Giffords chose not to have security at the event despite threats to her safety.
Democrat hacks across the nation from the New York Times to the networks and every left wing blog in the universe humped Sarah Palin’s use of a crosshairs map for days following the shooting, but no one pointed out that Giffords was at least partially responsible for the tragedy of January 8, 2011.
All of this would be moot if there were no guns in our society. But there are guns, there will always be guns, and regardless of how many guns laws the Left attempts to pass to deprive citizens of their rights, evil men will always find means to have guns.
